A few summers ago we started watching Best Cake Wins, Sugar Rush, and Nailed it. My kids saw fondant and really wanted to try decorating a cake with it. I thought it would be fun to have a small cake for each of them and some fondant so they could try cake decorating. I promised them we would do it. It just didn't happen that summer though or the next. Finally this summer I figured out the best way to make five small cakes, bought a bunch of fondant from the store and followed through with my promise.
Lynnlee helped me make two sheet cakes. One was funfetti and the other was red velvet. Then we cut six circle shaped pieces out of each. Then each kid got to choose what kind of cake they wanted. Some choose only funfetti, one chose only red velvet and some chose one of each. The cakes were two layered. Lynnlee helped me frost them and then we put them in the freezer. That night everyone chose a main fondant color for their base layer. Then we got out rolling pins and cookie cutters and they went crazy decorating their cakes. They had a hard time rolling out and placing the base layer on top so we helped them with that. They did the rest. It was like edible play dough and they enjoyed rolling it out and using the different cookie cutters.
It was a very labor intensive activity. I don't think this will become a yearly tradition but it was fun trying it out and now they can all say they've tried fondant.
Everyone ate a slice of their cakes that night. Then we put a few of them in the freezer to save for later.
